Scoring, Points, and Tiebreakers at the Midwest Youth Cup
Pool play at the Midwest Youth Cup awards 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 for a loss. A forfeit gives the team that appeared 3 points, recorded as a 2-0 score. Teams level on points are separated by a fixed five-step tiebreaker.
Key facts
- Win 3 points, tie 1 point, loss 0 points.
- Forfeit: 3 points to the team that appeared, recorded as 2-0.
- Goal differential and goals scored are each capped at plus four per game.
- The tiebreaker order is fixed and applied in sequence.
How points are earned
Each pool-play result converts to points: 3 for a win, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss. A forfeit awards the team that appeared 3 points and is recorded as a 2-0 score. Pool standings are ordered by total points before any tiebreaker is applied.
Tiebreaker order
When two or more teams finish level on points, the following tiebreakers are applied in order until the tie is broken:
- Head-to-head result
- Goals allowed
- Goal differential, capped at plus four per game
- Goals scored, capped at plus four per game
- Penalty kicks
Why the goal caps exist
Goal differential and goals scored are each capped at plus four per game. A team that wins by six still records a plus four for that match. The cap keeps standings competitive and removes any incentive to run up a score against a weaker opponent.
Advancing from the pool
Points and the tiebreaker order determine pool standings, and standings determine which teams advance. Championship matches are played in applicable divisions. Every team is guaranteed at least three games regardless of pool results.
